The Folkestone School for Girls ‘Friends’ are a group of volunteers who organise events to raise funds for the benefit of the school and pupils. We also assist the school with the provision of refreshments at open evenings and school concerts. In its time the ‘Friends’ have raised thousands of pounds, which has been spent on equipment and resources to enhance our children’s educational experience and the school’s facilities.
Our ‘Friends’ is about much more than simply fundraising. The ‘Friends’ exists to provide closer links between home and school and it is an excellent way to bring staff, parents and friends together socially in support of the school, working towards a common goal. All families are automatically members of the Folkestone School for Girls ‘Friends’ when their daughter joins our school.
At our recently held AGM our ‘Friends’ committee for 2015/16 was established and this year consists of two Officers: Chair and Treasurer. We also have approximately 6 ordinary committee members to make up the full committee. We are particularly proud that such a small committee is able to organise and run events that raise funds for the school of over 1200 pupils!
The Committee meet on a regular basis usually once or twice per term (typically on a Wednesday evening from 7pm). Our Annual General Meeting is held at the beginning of the academic year and provides an opportunity for all parents to come along and hear in more detail about the work of the ‘Friends’, the events we have run, the funds we have raised and how the money has been spent. It is also the occasion when we elect our new committee members.
We are always looking for ‘Friends’ volunteers who can commit some of their time to support the work of the ‘Friends’ such as sourcing/providing raffle prizes, selling tickets, donating items for the event, assisting at the event itself or providing resources and contacts. Every little helps and your support is invaluable.
Like most PTAs, the majority of our funds are raised through the events that we run. Some of our most popular events are: our annual quiz night, Year 7 & 8 discos for both our school and the Harvey Grammar, Easter Egg hunt, Fashion Show evenings all of which contribute to raise funds for the school! There is always something going on and we are always looking to add more events to our core portfolio.
We are always happy to receive donations of raffle prizes to be used at our events! Please take a look at our calendar of events to find out when our next event will be taking place.
Following a fundraising event the money is banked straight away. It is at our ‘Friends’ Committee meetings that the decisions on how to spend the money are agreed. Previous spending exceeded £3000 towards equipment and resources to enhance your daughters’ education.
We have a well stocked second-hand uniform store at the school and parents are more than welcome to come and take a look to see if there is anything your daughter requires. Prices range from as little as £1 and we will always welcome donations of any uniform your daughter may have grown out of. All funds raised go directly into the ‘Friends’ fund to support the school.
