Since September 2007, our Professional Mentor, Tina Barton, has developed extensive and varied bespoke programmes of professional studies for our ever increasing number of initial trainee teachers, (ITT). We have also been expanding our network of Higher Education Institute (HEI) providers to include eQualititas, the Open University, King’s College, London, St Mary’s, as well as building on our existing partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University, (CCCU). The strength of our work with CCCU has been acknowledged in the Partnership Evaluation Framework, graded as a ‘Leading’ Partnership school

Since the launch of the School Direct Programme, [S.D.P], we have widened our training role across schools and across phrases as part of our partnership with Shepway Teaching School. As the lead school for the Secondary SDP within this partnership, our Professional Mentor has been trained to undertake the role and responsibilities of a Professional Higher Education Tutor, reflecting the spirit of a truly school led training programme

This year, 2016-17, twelve departments; English, Mathematics, Science, RE, History, ICT/Computing, PE, Music, Geography, Modern Foreign Language, Art, and Psychology, will be training School Direct and PGCE students. In addition, we remain the first choice for many second placements trainees, from a wide range of Teaching Alliances, and we have on-going work experience opportunities through the School Experience Programme. We have been delighted with the rapid expansion in the numbers of students that we have trained year on year, and we are particular proud of our continuing success rate. Indeed, since 2007, 98% of our trainees have been awarded  ‘High’ [Outstanding] or ‘Good’. All of these have secured permanent teaching positions and progression after training has been impressively rapid.

In addition, we are committed to developing a personalised and targeted CPD programme. This provides a diverse range of personal development and leadership opportunities for all of our staff, as well as other schools. Our Newly Qualified Teachers are participating in regular training sessions specifically designed to meet their needs and these sessions are open to NQTs regionally. Experienced members of staff are offered many opportunities to share their expertise through mentoring, organising training sessions for our own staff and those from other schools. All our staff can apply to gain funding and/or time release to pursue accredited courses.

As part of the Shepway Teaching School, (STS), partnership, we offer places on the Schools Direct programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status, QTS, and the opportunity to achieve a PGCE qualification.  This school based route into teaching allows you to experience all aspects of the role of a teacher throughout your training year and you will be guided by our well trained and experienced mentors.
