The Folkestone School for Girls has a commitment to providing Teacher Training programmes of high quality and practical value. Our programmes are underpinned by a strong set of school values which give it purpose and direction.  We have a close partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University, (CCCU) and work with a number of other Higher Education Institute (HEI) providers such eQualititas, the Open University, King’s College London and St Mary’s. The strength of our work with CCCU has been acknowledged in the Partnership Evaluation Framework, where we are graded as a ‘Leading’ Partnership School.

Both our School Direct and PGCE programmes run in partnership with Shepway Teaching School are directed towards the improvement of education. Our training programme has been designed with a focus to allow you to engage with the professional issues that affect all teachers; exploring educational philosophies and the practical realities of teaching and learning. At FSG we will help you develop your professional identity, help you form your teaching personality and the type of teacher you want to be.

The Professional Studies Programme is further complemented through lesson observations, subject mentor lesson feedback, meetings with your subject mentors and weekly reflections on your experience and learning.

You will have the opportunity to gain further insights into FSG’s philosophy and approach to teaching and learning by sharing excellent practice in the many other CPD pathways that all teachers at FSG attend.

Teaching and learning at FSG is informed by principles of academic excellence, pedagogic research and evidenced based teaching. As a member of staff you will be also given the opportunity to collaborate with others to engage in research to develop evidence informed practice.

Newly Qualified Teachers also participate in training sessions specifically designed to meet their needs in their first year of teaching. These sessions are open to NQTs regionally and have been well attended.

As part of the Shepway Teaching School, (STS), partnership, we offer places on the Schools Direct programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the opportunity to achieve the PGCE qualification.  Schools Direct is a school based route into teaching which allows you to experience all aspects of the role of a teacher throughout your training year. You will be supported by our well trained and experienced mentors so that you may take up your first appointment to teach with confidence and competence and able to generate a commitment in others to lifelong learning.
